In 2020 , due to global events, BMES at UCI gave our members a choice between a list of projects that they could work on in their own home! Typically for the annual design project, it consists of one type of device that you work on for all 3 quarters. Teams could choose their own adventure by developing a Temperature Sensor, Pulse Oximeter, Personal Hearing Aid, Join Pressure Sensor, Lie Detector, or even their own project idea! This was a great opportunity to meet some new friends or people with similar interests while also gaining experience in product design and development. No prior experience was necessary and materials for the project were provided!
For this project, teams had the task to build a dermatoscope attachment that could enhance their own phone camera. In addition, they also had to construct an image processing code that could identify if the person had melanoma or any other skin disease. From this project, members where able to learn essential Solidworks skills, practice 3D printing, and gain an understanding of image processing.
Bionic Hand Project (2018 - 2019)
Heart Valve Project (2017 - 2018)
During last year's BMES project, members were tasked in designing their own aortic heart valves. Through this project, they were able to experience designing models in Solidworks, gain insight on the structural components of a heart valve, and learn more about the anatomy of heart through the dissection of a porcine heart.
